On the Residual Finiteness and Other Properties of (relative) One-relator Groups

چکیده
A relative one-relator presentation has the form P = 〈x,H;R〉 where x is a set, H is a group, and R is a word on x±1 ∪H. We show that if the word on x±1 obtained from R by deleting all the terms from H has what we call the unique max-min property, then the group defined by P is residually finite if and only if H is residually finite (Theorem 1). We apply this to obtain new results concerning the residual finiteness of (ordinary) one-relator groups (Theorem 4). We also obtain results concerning the conjugacy problem for onerelator groups (Theorem 5), and results concerning the relative asphericity of presentations of the form P (Theorem 6).

Reflections on the residual finiteness of one-relator groups
Let G D ha; b; : : : j r D 1i be a one-relator group equipped with at least two generators. For all w which do not commute with r in the ambient free group on the generators a, b, ..., the groups G.r;w/ D ha; b; : : : j rrw D r2i are not residually finite and have the same finite images as G. The existence of this family of one-relator groups which are not residually finite reinforces what is b...
متن کاملCharacter Theory of Symmetric Groups, Analysis of Long Relators, and Random Walks
We survey a number of powerful recent results concerning diophantine and asymptotic properties of (ordinary) characters of symmetric groups. Apart from their intrinsic interest, these results are motivated by a connection with subgroup growth theory and the theory of random walks. As applications, we present an estimate for the subgroup growth of an arbitrary Fuchsian group, as well as a finite...

Adding two generators and one arbitrary relator to a nontrivial torsion-free group, we always obtain an SQ-universal group. In the course of the proof of this theorem, we obtain some other results of independent interest. For instance, adding one generator and one relator in which the exponent sum of the additional generator is one to a free product of two nontrivial torsion-free groups, we als...
متن کاملAbelian subgroup separability of some one-relator groups
Following Malcev [5], we will call a subgroup M of a group G finitely separable if for any element g ∈ G, not belonging to M, there exists a homomorphism φ of group G onto some finite group X such that gφ / ∈Mφ. This is equivalent to the statement that for any element g ∈ G \M, there exists a normal subgroup N of finite index in G such that g / ∈MN . A group G is subgroup separable if each of i...

In this article we investigate the L1–norm of certain functions on groups called divisibility functions. Using these functions, their connection to residual finiteness, and integration theory on profinite groups, we define the residual average of a finitely generated group. One of the main results in this article is the finiteness of residual averages on finitely generated linear groups. Whethe...
